In2STEM Work Experience Programme 2024

Work Experience Placement students outside the OCRB

From 19th – 23rd August 2024, we welcomed a group of A-Level students for a week-long work experience programme at the Oglesby Cancer Research Building, Paterson Building and Christie NHS Foundation Trust clinics and research facilities.

Delivered through our partnership with In2STEM, this annual work experience programme equips students with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to excel in STEM careers.

Taking place across several sites on the University of Manchester’s Withington Campus, the programme gave students a sense of translational science in action. Students saw how pathologists interact with imaging specialists, how medical physicists work alongside radiographers, and how research nurses bridge the gap between current standard of care and new treatments

The University of Manchester and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust each hosted several activities, giving students the chance to experience a range of work-based scenarios to help inform their future careers. Students had the opportunity to experience how lab work is conducted, how clinical delivery interacts with research, and how to present and disseminate research findings.

At the end of the week-long programme, students delivered a presentation on a research project that they had examined to Amanda Rees, the Head of Research Operations for Manchester Experimental Cancer Medicine Team & The Christie Experimental Cancer Medicine Team.

We loved hosting our work experience visitors, and hope that we see them again in a cancer-related research or clinical career in the future!

If you want to find out more about work experience opportunities please email Simon Reeds in the MCRC Training team or Lydia Botley in The Christie work experience team.

Spending a day at The Christie was great. Watching patient interactions first hand was especially motivating as an aspiring medic. The dedication of the healthcare professionals at The Christie left a lasting impression on me.”
