New MCRC Building

New research building proposal

The Manchester Cancer Research Centre’s (MCRC) vision is the development of personalised cancer treatments, based on improved knowledge of each individual patient’s disease characteristics, leading directly to better patient outcomes.

We have developed proposals for a new research building because the rapid expansion of high quality research at the MCRC has reached a point where future progress will be compromised by lack of space. The new MCRC research building is crucial to:

  • support the expansion of research activities with tremendous potential for future breakthroughs
  • help the MCRC to become a world-leading comprehensive cancer research centre
  • create a recruitment incentive to attract additional world-class researchers in a deeply competitive international marketplace
  • allow the improvement and co-location of facilities and services on the MCRC site – helping us to use resources in the most effective way.

Our public consultation started in April 2011 with four drop-in sessions (two held in April with follow-up sessions in June) and a Public Meeting in September to give us the opportunity to answer questions and provide further clarification on the proposals. Following feedback from residents at the Public Meeting we committed to audit and optimise use of existing car park provision and to engage with local residents on plans for Withington Green.

What happens next

The Council’s Planning Committee met on Thursday 15 March 2012 and approved our plans for the new Manchester Cancer Research Centre building, marking an important new phase in cancer research in Manchester. The submission is available online via Manchester City Council’s web-based Public Access system (www.manchester.gov.uk/planning/publicaccess).

We received formal planning consent from Manchester City Council and have discharged all relevant pre-commencement conditions set by Manchester City Council to allow enabling works to commence on the site, including tree felling. Tree felling is now in progress and will take place over the coming weeks. The aim is to have most of this completed by the end of July.

We are also going through the procurement process to select a contractor for the building (MCRC Phase I). This process usually takes between 8–10 weeks giving an anticipated date of mid-July to end-July for a contractor to be selected. Building work on site should begin shortly after this. Further details and planned schedules of activity will be available on this website in due course and we will continue to provide timely reports so please check back for updates.
